Adrian Newey to Aston Martin

One of the biggest rumours in recent months —Adrian Newey, one of Formula 1’s most celebrated engineers, is reportedly set to join Aston Martin. The deal, rumoured to be worth £50 million over five years, making him one of the highest-paid figures in F1’s technical space. This move signifies Aston Martin’s ambition to build a world-class engineering team under the leadership of Lawrence Stroll. Lawrence Stroll, Aston Martin’s owner, aims to turn the team into an engineering powerhouse, hoping to achieve World Championship success in the coming years. The question remains—can Newey replicate the success he’s had at Red Bull with Aston Martin?

Ferrari’s Missed Opportunity

Newey had been heavily linked to a potential move to Ferrari, but those negotiations reportedly fell through. Ferrari was reluctant to offer Newey the level of control and influence he requested, including veto power over technical decisions. While Ferrari remains a competitive team, Newey has instead opted for a more flexible arrangement with Aston Martin, where he is expected to have significant authority.

Lawrence Stroll’s Vision: Building a Super Team

Stroll has invested heavily in Aston Martin’s infrastructure in recent years. The team has built a state-of-the-art facility, including a brand-new wind tunnel and cutting-edge technology aimed at attracting top talent. Newey will join a host of other high-profile hires, including Andy Cowell, the mastermind behind Mercedes’ engine dominance, and Enrico Cardile, a key figure in Ferrari’s aerodynamics department.

The Honda Partnership and Max Verstappen’s Future

Aston Martin’s upcoming Honda Works partnership for 2026 is another factor that may have influenced Newey’s decision. Honda will be providing engines for the team from 2026 onwards, positioning Aston Martin as a potential championship contender. This, along with Newey’s presence, could also make the team more attractive to top drivers, including Max Verstappen, who has reportedly been exploring options beyond Red Bull.

Mercedes and the Driver Dilemma

Meanwhile, Mercedes is also watching the developments closely. With the rise of young talent like Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who has been making waves in the junior categories, the future of the team’s lineup is in question. Former F1 driver and World Champion, Nico Rosberg suggest that George Russell could be under pressure to deliver, especially with the possibility of Verstappen becoming available in the near future – “George is not safe at all because Toto still wants Max,” he told Sky Sports.

What It Means for Red Bull

The loss of Adrian Newey is a significant blow for Red Bull, where Newey has been instrumental in their success over the past few decades. While the team remains strong, with figures like Pierre Wache and others still in place, they no longer have access to Newey’s problem-solving expertise, which has often provided the edge in difficult situations. Red Bull will need to adapt quickly to maintain their dominant position in F1.

Colapinto’s Future in Formula 1

Colapinto’s performance in Italy, where he finished P12, was commendable. If he hadn’t made an error at the second Lesmo, he might have reached Q3, much like his teammate Albon. However, Baku’s demanding circuit will pose a greater challenge, and we will get to see if Colapinto is really a worthy full-time F1 candidate. Franco Colapinto has brought something unique to the grid with his charismatic personality and strong Argentine fanbase. Backed by significant financial support from sponsors, he has strengthened his position at Williams. It remains unclear whether he will continue in F1 next year, but his on-track performances and off-track appeal are being closely watched. Should Albon move on to Mercedes or back to Red Bull, there’s speculation that Colapinto could secure a full-time seat at Williams.

Red Bull’s Pit Stop Struggles

Although Red Bull continues to dominate, they are no longer leading in track position or pit stop times. Ferrari has now taken the lead, averaging 2.59 seconds per stop, thanks to improvements made by Frederic Vasseur. Aston Martin, on the other hand, has faced challenges, especially earlier this season, despite some improvements.

2026 Regulation Changes

The 2026 season will bring significant changes, especially in aero rules and power units. Teams are already preparing for what could be a new era in F1. Mercedes, confident under James Allison, feel a mood within the team similar to that of 2014, when they dominated the Turbo-Hybrid era. Both Mercedes and Ferrari are expected to lead in engine development, but will they nail it once again?
